Bornholmer Straße Cherry Blossoms

Well, these pictures are really quite spring-y and not summer-y, as they're about a month old right now. But, oops!, forgot to post them sooner! Anywho, cherry blossoms are enjoyable any time of year in my opinion, so here you go!

We have a lovely little pathway here in Berlin, right where my neighborhood, Prenzlauer Berg, of former East Berlin, borders Wedding, formerly West Berlin. And this little pathway runs right along the S-Bahn bridge (Bösebrücke) that used to be a border crossing between East and West. In fact, it was the opening of this border crossing that marked the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989.

And what does this have to do with cherry trees, you ask? Well, it just so happens that, after German Reunification in 1990, the Japanese government collected donations so that they could give Germany a gift to celebrate their newfound friendship. And that gift was over 8,000 cherry trees, some of which reside right under that bridge! Also, conveniently, about three-minutes away from our apartment and along one of my prettier running routes.

It's a small section of a runner's/biker's paradise down there.

My fabulous pink bike trying to camouflage with its surroundings.

Old Europeans (and perhaps a few young ones I know...) always walk with their hand behinds their backs like this. It's so stinking cute!

That's the bridge that used to be the border crossing in the background.

That little yellow tree is determined to make his presence known.

Now that is my kind of pink!

And this tree totally made my day. It seems he had an identity crisis at some point and couldn't decide whether he wanted white or pink flowers. So he decided to go with both! (Yup, it's really just one tree!)
